of the railway passes through Kowloon, connecting with the

remainder of the British Section which runs through the New

Territory, joining up with the Chinese Section at the

boundary with Kwangtung.

The Yaumati slipway and store, both of considerable

importance to Goverment, are also situated in Kowloon.

(iii) Trade. Kowloon has become an important outlet

for the needs of trade and commerce, more especially in

connection with shipping. The Hong Kong and Whampoa Dock

Company, one of the largest companies of its kind in the

East, with its godowns, wharves, piers and shipbuilding yards,

is situated in Kowloon. On the waterfront are various

wharves and godowns used by the ocean going shipping companies,

whose ships pass through the Colony. It is only necessary to

say that the P. & O., C.P.R. and Holt's all berth their

steamers at Kowloon. It would be difficult, if not impossible,

to find accommodation to meet their needs on the island itself.

Holt's wharves and godowns, the China Light and Power Company's

station, the Hong Kong and China Gas Company's gas works, the

Green Island cement works, and numerous other factories are

situated in this area. There is an important Harbour of

Refuge from typhoons on the west of Kowloon Point, the need

for which for the protection of craft is paramount. The one

on the island at Causeway Bay is not sufficient for existing

needs.

(b) Military.

I attach a list A

-

of the various Military

establishments at present existing in Kowloon.

9.

(c) Naval.

I attach a list B of the Naval establishments in

Kowloon, which are essential to the needs of the Navy, as

there is not sufficient accommodation on the island for its

purposes.
